Electric Telegraph—Tress HASTING S, l.#ast Night.

That the returning prosperity is enabling sheep farmers to pay nnproved prices for breeding stock was amply borne out at Hastings to-day, when at the Tonioana showgrounds the annual Hawke’s Bay ram rair opened. Prices tor . flock Romney rams showed a distinct adianie on the past season and compared with the prices for the past three years showed that the farming community w*is facing the future with con fidence. Up to 23 guineas was paid lor dock Romneys compared * jth th 6 top price of 18 guineas in 1934 and 15 guineas in 193-1 As the quality of the entry was no better on the average than the standard m the past the improvement can be attributed solely to the better prices being obtained for primary produce The vendors had cause to be well satisfied, particularly those who secured top prices one breeder. C l. Keeble, of Fitzlierbert. Palmer stem North, realising 3,6 guineas tor 20 shearling rams, while the well-known local breeder, Mr J. E. Hewitt, oj Mangamaire, averaged lo 2 guineas for 30 rams, giving a return of 4->0 guineas. Other breeders realised proportionately. . . Jaist year buyers were critical m their purchases, only the best rejections meeting keen competition : but to-day, with improved prospects and better prices for meat and wool, there was a decidedly brighter tone and a consequent improvement in prices. , Manawatu and Uairarapa breeders contributed the bulk ot the entry while Hawke’s Bay breeders were represented. Buyers were present from all the East ( oast districts with a strong contingent irqm Wairoa, who were taking an active interest in better-class ranis. 1 here was an easing in tone towards the middle of the afternoon on average lines, but good rams continued to meet a keen inquiry right to the inclusion.

A similar improvement in price 1 anticipated for flock Southdown r.mi which will !>e offered to-morrow.
