ETHIOPIAN CHESSBOARD.
ITALIANS’ STALEMATE
GENERA ITS PERSONAE SUMMARY. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. ROME, January 28. Though Signor Mussolini enthusiastically congratulated Marshal Badoglio and his troops, Marshal Badoglio’s own summary of the situation in Abyssinia seems to indicate stalemate. A communication from Harrar says that the Italians are still striving to recover lost positions. Gerazmatch Takla, who is pursuing guerrilla tactics, made a night raid on an Italian post at Akebela and killed ten and wounded five ot the enemy, but was compelled to abandon two wounded warriors, whom he alleges Italian reinforcements burnt alive.
Abegaz Nagatch’s warriors captured five Italians in a surprise attack near Adowa. Dedjazmatch Salie ambushed 300 Eritreans in Tembien and killed the Italian captain and 50 askaris. The remainder fled.
All these raids preceded the fourday battle in Tembien, after which Has Kassa’s and Has Seyoum’s troops divided into hundreds of small groups and resumed the harassing of the invaders, who are ineffectually retorting with mountain guns.
SERTOUS ITALIAN REPORT. ROME, January 28. A communique issued by Marshall Badoglio announces that as a result of a- reconnaissance of Wadari. on the southern front, an entire Swedish Red Cross camp hospital was captured, including five lorries, one of which contained 27 cases of ammunition.
