KARLOFF IN FIENDISH ROLE.
Karloff is back! And it you don’t watch out, you’re going to miss Boris Karloff's splendid new offering, “The Black Room,” a Columbia picture, which opens at the King’s Theatre to-night. The ace bogey-man of Hollywood brings a new type of fiend to the screen in “The Black Room.” Appearing without extensive make-up, Karloff does some fine acting as the murderous Baron de B-arghrnan. Ruling in his castle with a tyrannical band, the Baron is hated by the peasants. The disappearance of lovely young peasant girls arouses their suspicions, and when they rise in righteous rebellion, the disappearances and consequent murders are traceable to the Baron’s grisly Black Room, which is an inspired chamber of horrors, if there ever was one! His demise, however, is finally brought about (to audiences’ delight) by young Robert Allen, who portrays excellently a dashing lieutenant. When the Baron tries to win lovely Marian Marsh away from Allen, trouble starts and ends woefully f<Yr tin l titled bead. Outstanding featurettes comprise
“Scrappy’s Television” (a Scrappy cartoon), “Do Your Stuff” (comedy), “Winn Mot: Figlit” (sports thrill) and “Captain Hits the Ceiling” (comedy).
