STREET PUZZLES IN THE CITIES Street name duplication, in New Zealand cities is a constant source of difficulty to the public and particularly to the Post Office. Auckland, the largest city, with widespread suburbs presents the worst picture of confusion, for in that area some hundreds of streets are duplicated in name. Albert, Beach and Church are so popular that nine streets carry these names. Maori nomenclature Is also in favour with 100 much popularity for Ivowhai, of which there are seven examples, while Park, suggesting pleasant surroundings, is favoured to ike extent of appearing mostly vith the addition oi “Avenue” on fifteen occasions. The Post Office? has approached local bodies with suggestions for elimination of duplicate names, taking into consideration the whole city and its suburbs. Christchurch and Dunedin present the* same difficulty to a smaller degree. Christchurch, has a , very large number of street duplications toe*-, and Dunedin presents a. similar puzzle to the stranger. Bay. (ilen and Hill being even more numerous—excellent descriptive names but confusing, as an indication of actual location. Residents in such streets are running risks of delay in delivery of their correspondency*, particularly from outside the city area, unless the address has attached the district designation of a letter and number. For instance, correspondence from large centres intended for Auckland arrives there already sorted « into' eight sections according to the district designation, and goes direct to the suburban post office from which postal delivery is made, but correspondence not carrying the designation may first go to the chief post office and require further .sorting for delivery to the sub-office. 'Phis is the principal reason why the Post Office is requesting the co-oper-ation of business firms and the general public in promoting tin* use of postal designations as this i s to the mutua.l advantage of both parties-.
