MUSICAL CLUB.

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. FOSTERING LOVE OF MUSIC. Mr W. L. Tattle presided over a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Pabiatua Musical Club last evening. Apologies were received from the Rev. and Mrs K. L. Warren, Miss H. Ross and Miss E. Chat win. The secretary’s annual report was as follows :

‘ ‘Your executive committee has pleasure in reporting another successful year’s activity, musically socially and financially. The Club does not aim to build up large credit balances, cur objects being rather the enjoyment of good music, on our own part and the promotion ot the love ojf good music in the community generally. It is gratifying to note, however, that we can again show a balance on the right side of the ledger. To that desirable result the prompt payment of subscriptions by members has contributed. The thanks of the committee are also due to several ladies and gentlemen who have helped on the work of the Club by donations. “Forty-four members were on the roll for last year, a small increase on the previous year. The main work for the year was ‘A Fantasia ot National Airs’ and this, supplemented by several tuneful glees, was well received at the annual concert. For the success of that function we are also indebted to several solo artists.

“The social committee functioned well during the year and shouldered an especially heavy burden on the night of the annual concert. “At the annual concert Mr and Mrs W. H. Sta inton were fare welled on their departure for Waihi, the Musical Club co-operating with, several local sports’ bodies of which both Mr and Mrs Sta inton were members. “Later in the year the Club paid a much appreciated visit to the Public Hospital. On that occasion we were under the baton of Mr A W. Hamilton. “The thanks (if the Club art due to cur pianist, Mr M. Pringle, whose services we are indeed fortunate to possess, to the auditor, Mr P. R. Boa,gey and to the Press for valiuible as si stance ren de red. ’ ’ PRESIDENT’S REPORT The President referring to the year's activities said:— “You have already heard in secretary’s annual repo it: of most of the .activities of the Club during last year which culminated in the highly successful concert at the end of the season at which members bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Stainton. The loss of these two enthusiastic Club members will lie keenly felt-, and L desire to place on record the Club’s sincere appreciation of their efforts on its behalf. The Club’s thanks are also due to the soloists who l\elped to make the concert such a success and also to Mr A!. R. Pringle for liis very valuable services to the club as accompanist, and to Mr Stafford, our secretary.

“The Club would also like to congratulate one of its members. Miss i>. F. E. Junker, for her outstanding successes at the Napier and Wanganui competitions. At the former Miss Junker was successful in. winning several vocal sections and the gold medal, and at Wanganui she won the' special prize awarded by the Music Teachers Registration Hoard of N.Z to the best performer in the national song section. The Club members will be very pleased to hear ef Miss Junker’s success.

“In the past the activities <* the Club have bet‘ii mainly along the lines of choral and glee music, hut as tht' name of the Club “Paliiatua. Musical Club” would indicate it is felt that the Club should extend its activities to cater for all classes of music activities in the community, and it is hoped to introduce; quartette and trio singing along with the usual activities of the Club, and also instrumental music it possible, although it is difficult to see at pre-

sent in what way the Club could cater for instrumental music. “However, the matter is left to me miners to discuss and any suggestion made will receive tin* attention of the committee. In the past the Club has always endeavoured to have at least one sot oif : elections from some well known opera as well as glees and part songs for rend* ring at tin* annual concert butpthis year we wish to add souk* vocal trios and quartettes* and po*>ibly instrumental trios to the programme.

“As the> secretary lias told you it will require at I'ju-t 40 financial members to be guaranteed before the Club can ho carried on 'successfully, and as it is expect (‘J that the expenditure! on new this year will be fairly heavy it is- imped that those members who accidentally overlook-

ed the payment of their subscriptions last year ow ing to the sudden « lc.se ('if the season will remedy the ou-r-

sight by kiting the secretary have their. subscriptions as soon as convenient.

“1 am pleased to say that several new members have indicated their intention of joining tin* Club this season, and I extend to them a very hearty welcome and trust that they will deri\ e as much pleasure from tin* activities of the Musical Club as 1 have done niysel* . 1 am pleased to say that air-ong the new members is Mr Truscott who is well known in musical circles in Wellington whose musical knowledge v.y.11, 1 am sure, be a great asset to tin* Club. With the membership augmented there is no reason why the coming season should not be a very successful one. ospeeiaiK u members are sufficiently enthusiastic to attend the practices as regularly as possible, as it is only in this way that a performance can be put on at the end ot the season with the desred nigh standard of t finish. “It. simply now to do-tci-mine how many members are available for tin* conning year, and ii th ro is sufficient it will be formally moved that the Club continue to carry on. after which the election ol officers will be proceeded with. I will bo pleased if new members will kindly hold up the right iiand so that we can have a count.” On the motion of Air J.
