SWIMMING CLUB.

GRANT FROM COUNCIL. DESERVING OBJECT. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson) presided over tlie monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council, held last evening. There were also present: C’rs. W. H. \ 3lurc.h, A. A. Vaughan, J. E. 3lurphy, F. Brit land, P. R. Boa gey. \\ T. Brown and S. K. Siddells. An ap logy for absence was received *Xg.** Or. A. D. Donald. The Pahiatua Swimming Club wrote asking for a. grant ot £7 10® to assist its financial difficulties. Cr. 31urc*h moved that the grant be made. Last year, the amount he said, was £lO and the cause was quite a deserving one. Cr. Boagey seconded tin* motion.. The club, he said, ha*l had rather an unfortunate year the summer being one of the worst ever experienced. The grant would be a big help to the Club in maintaining interest in its operations. Cr. Vaughan, considered* that in making sucii a request the Club should submit a balance-sliec-t. With this view T the Mayor agreed. The grant of £7 10s was made by the Council, on the understanding that the Club submits a balancesheet. BASKET-BALL COURT The Bush Basket-ball Association wrote asking for the use of tb-3 3lunicipal Tennis Courts for basketball again this winter. The rental last year was £2. 4'ke Association pointed out that as several teams had withdrawn from tlie competition this year a- reduction in the rental was hoped for. Cr. Boagey thought the Associa*tion might be met. but tlie rental was already quite low .

Other members agreed with this view.

Cr. Brown pointed out that many basket-ball players also played tennis there and had. to pay a subscription for that privilege too. Nevertheless £2 was not an exorbitant charge. It was resolved to allow the use of the courts again at a rental of v2. OVERSEER S REPORT. The overseer reported as follows: “Tar patching has been done u* 3lain Street; water-table* cleaned u. Arthur. Albert, and Tararua StreeTs ; stones have been picked off in Arthur and I'yndall Streets. and metal spread; footbridge in Tararua Street has been redecked ; bridge in Albert Street has been repaired . grader lias been working in Tiramnea Road ; teams have been carting metal to dump ; Tiraumea Road has been patched ; reservoir has been inspec ted twice weekly; footpath in Edward Street has teen cleaned.'’ The report was received. THE LIBRARY The 3layor remarked that it had cost about £2O less to run the library during the past year compared with the previous twelve months Subscriptions, said the Clerk, liad kept up well and in fact the numher had increased slightly. GENERAL. Cr. S- K. Siddells reported oil having attended the Municipal Conference in Wellington prior to Easter and he referred to certain remits or interest, dealing with heavv traffic fees, itinerant traders and hawkers, rtc*. The Conference had passed a vote of sympathy to the municipalities .affected by the recent severe earthquake and Cr. Siddells said he had returned thanks on behalf of Pahiatua for the vote Tlie unavoidable absence of the Mayor had been feelingly commented on and regret expressed at his absence. The 3layor said that the Council really required two clravs. One was ialßiig pieces and ‘the Council had another now* on lorn. A new dray would to be purchased soon. One_ building permit to the valu» of £270 was issued. Accounts amounting to £93 is lid were passed for payment
