COUNTRY NEWS.

HOROEKA. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs Lunt the president, and was well attended by members. There were also a few visitors from surrounding districts. The proceedings opened with the singing of the Institute song. The secretary reported having written a letter of sympathy to Miss Bowie,. who had unfortunately had a leg broken in tlie recent hockey tournament, and also a letter of congratulation to Mrs H. Paterson on her selection as Dominion president. The roll call was omitted owing to the presence of Mrs Harrison, of Otaki, who demonstrated on the making of pineneedle baskets. Mrs Harrison had also on exhibition all kinds of handcraft work. Advantage was taken of her jiresenee to judge the soft toy competition. First place was awarded to 'Mrs A. Gillam for a doll’s bed and clothing, whilst a golliwog made by Mrs Bunt came second. The judge commented very favourably on the work done and made special awards to Mrs Urquhart for a doll in cradle, and Mrs G. Frame for a knitted monkey. The musical parcel was won by Mrs Urquhart. The potato growing contest wa3 discussed, and all members expressed a desire to enter. Lord Bledisloe’s ajipeal for a contribution of one penny per member was responded to by all members. Mrs Clemens called for a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Lunt for the use of her home, which was carried with musical honours. Mrs Lunt suitably responded, and the singing of the National Anthem brought a most successful afternoon to a» close. The next meeting will be held in the school on the" 11th October.
