INDUSTRIAL AWARDS.
AM AUCKLAND OPINION. Electric Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, September 20. The opinion that in consequence of a recent judgment of the Appeal Court many industrial awards are invalid was expressed in the Arbitration Court. In opposing certain applications by two clothing trade unions the agent for the employers, Mr Wright, said that one clause provided that piecework was not allowed. That was a contradiction to section 11 of the Amendment Act of 1932. Mr Vv right made a similar submission regarding several other clauses. Miss Cossey and Mr Moxom said that Mr Wright had sprung a surpiase. Clauses similar to those now challenged bad been customary in awaids for years. If the. Appeal boui t decision was correct the agreements were not worth the paper they were written on. Mr Justice Frazer said that the Appeal Court decision applied letrospectively. .Mr Moxom said that the clause giving union secretaries the right of entry to workers had }ieen agreed to tor years. It came as a surprise that such a- clause in an award now ini aimed the whole award. It meant that there would hardlv be an award in existence in the .Dominion, li Ho,lour said he would not Hire to say how many awards would be affected.
