ANDORRA ELECTION.

United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. ANDORRA, September 1. A democratic election based on universal suffrage has repudiated the joint control of Andorra by the Spanish Bishop of Urge! v and the French President. Thirteen supporters of the old Council-General were elected, five favouring the Co-Princes (the Bishop of Urgel and the President) and six being “neutral.” All the candidates denounced the Trench “invasion of Andorra. The Commandant of the French gendarmes who form the ‘'invading army” declares that he will not withdraw* till a responsible Government is actually in power. The election was fought on the issue of independence of the Republic versus control by the Co-Princes. Both sides claim a victory. The strike at the waterworks has been settled. The position will be clarified when the new CouncilGeneral meets on Wednesday. Few people, troubled to vote, owing to the novelty of the suffrage for adults over 25 years of age. Soup tureens and tin cans were used as ballot-boxes. The police restored order after fisticuffs, owing to a non-resident priest and ex-members of the Government endeavouring to record their votes.
