WOODVILLE UNEMPLOYED.

Strong exception was taken by the Woodville Borough Council to the action of a Woodville resident in making statements to the Unemployment Board regarding maintenance in the borough, which the council stated were contrary to fact. The matter was brought up when the Unemployment Board wrote asking for the comment of the council on the following letter received from a resident of Woodcille, alleging that the council had recently dispensed with the services of permanent employees with the intention that the maintenance work previously carried out by the staff should be" undertaken with relief labour under the board’s schemes. The town clerk reported having replied that he was directed by the Mayor to request that a full copy of the letter, giving the name of the writer, lie forwarded. The Commissioner advised that the letter was written by Mr H. Galbraith. The clerk said that none of the work on which relief labour had been employed was ordinary maintenance work. They had been employed, in a measure, just to keep them going. The Mayor (Mr J. Elder) said that the town clerk’s honour had been impugned as he had signed a declaration that unemployed men would not be put on ordinary maintenance work. He moved that the matter be left in the hands of the town clerk to give any information to the Unemployment Board that lie deemed necessary. The motion was carried after a discussion in which strong exception was taken to the reflection on the borough council.
