HUNT FOR HATED POLICE.
SUICIDE OF CHIEF. BODY DRAGGED THROUGH STREETS. United Press Assn. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. HAVANA, August 21. A crowd dug up the body of Antonia Anciart, ex-President, Alachado’s hated police chief, and dragged it through the streets to the University grounds. Here the body was stripped and hanged to a trolley, the crowd later attempting to burn it Anciart, who ten days ago had the position of almost supreme police authority, with power of life or death over the ordinary citizen, killed himself on Saturday. He had .been hunted for a week and died under an assumed name in a rented room. Another disorder marked the passing gf a former police-sergeant, Tito Sampol. Pursued by members of the A.8.C., he sought refuge in a cafe. There he killed a chauffeur in a rage, then killed himself. The Government began its second week of office with the strike situation still acute. Nine European vessels are awaiting discharge of cargo and four others are awaiting loads of sugar. All may have to depart unless the port workers go back soon. The Government has lost two million dollars in revenues and port fees; shipping companies and exporters have lost heavily.
