LYTTELTON BY-ELECTION.
OPPOSITION LEADER OPENS CAMPAIGN. Electric Telegrapn—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, August 21. In. opening the Labour Party’s' campaign in the Lyttelton by-elec-tion this evening, Mr H. E. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, paid a glowing tribute to the late member. Mr Jas McCombs, and, declared that Mrs McCombs was amongst the ablest 6t women in public life in New Zealand. He was confident that she would make history as the first woman to sit in the Parliament of the Dominion.

At the conclusion of the Labour Leader’s meeting at Lyttelton last ei'eiyng, a motion of thanks to Mr Holland for his address, and confidence in Mrs McCombs as the Labour .candidate for the constituency was*carried by acclamation. The meeting closed with three •dlieers for Mils McCombs.
