DANGERS OF QUOTA.
MUST BE PREVENTED. RAMIFICATIONS OF EXCHANGE The danger of the adoption of a dairy produce quota was emphasised by Mr A. B. Muggeridge at the annual meeting of shareholders in the Alton Dairy Company. ‘‘lf the quota comes in,” said Mr Muggeridge, “financial disaster stares every one of ns in the face.
“Unless the individual producers unite in watching the position,” he continued, “England will impose restrictions on New Zealand imports within the next three years.”
It was also possible, he predicted, that the exchange premium would disappear in the near future, because' undoubtedly it was alienating sympathy from New Zealand at Home. He had previously considered the exchange premium essential, but he, in common with others, had not realised what the ramifications of the step would be. There had been a reaction that would stagger the country. England maintained that New Zealand was dumping her produce there and not reciprocating by purchasing English goods.
Again emphasising the necessity for sinking private differences and uniting to face national difficulties, Mr Muggeridge concluded: “If we do not unite we will go out of existence.”
