The Southland contingent brought a pipe hand, which played the team out on to the field. The heavy Southland forwards looked formidable but the speed of the Canterbury pack more than compensated for the lack of weight behind the scrum. The Canterbury backs were much superior and the veteran half-back, Mullan, shooting his passes cut accurately. -elit his men away on many attacking movements. The Southland delence was admirable. Southland won the toss and played with the sun behind and the wind slightly favouring them. Southland set up an attack very eaily, but -he defence was sound and the attackers were as quickly thrown back on the defensive. Early in the game the score v-ond, Canterbury 13, Southland nil. For nearly half-an-hour play was without startling incident anil this was the only period when Southland looked like holding Canterbury. Taranaki’s drastically reorganised Rugby team defeated Wanganui by 27 to 9, but is still not satisfaciorv ln that their forwards allowed Wanganui to gain for too great a share of the ball from the scrums and lineouts. Certainly Dae winning margin might have been v idei since eight of Wanganui’s points came from lucky, though good, field goals. The Taranaki hacks were without the services of K. Fookes, who has been one of their mainstays; nevertheless they were an efficient scoring machine and would have compiled”mauy more poini s had they received a reasonable share of the ball AUCKLAND DEFEATS HAWKE'S BAY. . r , AUCKLAND, Last Night.
