THE RACING DESCRIBED

RHEA AT LAST. Golden Horn withdrew from the Trial Plate and eight went to the post. Surprising support came for Hark Forrard, a full sister to View Halloo and a non-starter the first day. Reed was the rider and his mount wound up a better favourite than Rhea. Hark Forrard was first away hut Rhea quickly ran to the front and opened up a gap of two lengths, Quebec aird Trader Horn being nearest. Rene Belle rushed up to the lead going out of the back with Rhea in behind, followed by Quebec, Hark Forrard, Hazoor and Chaste. Rene Belle, Quebec and Rhea turned first for home but up the straight Rhea made no race ot it and won handsomely from the fast-finishing and little-facied Hazoor by two lengths. Quebec was a nose back third and then came Rene Belle, Chaste and Hark; Forrard. A DEAD-HEAT. AU six horses went to the post in the Pongaroa High-weight, Vitaphone and Golden Horn being bracketed. Takakua was a- red hot fancy an the win machine with Royal Hash and the Kemba-11 bracket also fancied. To a good start -the field went away well in line. When they sorted themselves out. Laekston led Vitaphone, Takakua, Royal Hash, Golden Horn and line Acre. On the far turn Lackston showed the way to Takakua Vitaphone, Royal Hash, Golden Horn and Fine Acre. Royal Hash made a forward move on the bend mto third place, being just behind Laekston and Takakua into the straight. The field was spread across the track •• t the distance with several in line and anybody’s race. Takakua was a shade in front but Royal Hash, on the outside, caught him and fifty yards off the post a ->g neck advantage. With nil ins weight, however, Takakua came again and just got up to <lead-heat with Air R. Gregory’s horse on the post. Golden 'Horn nas third, one and a half lengths back, with Laekston fourth and then Vitaphone and Fine Acre. The favourite’s winning price showed investors a slight loss and he paid much better for a place.

JUGGLE ALL THE WAY. Me scratcbings in the Mangahao Handicap were Ath olspear and lakakiia. In a fairly even betting race Grand Tvihn (Voitre) wound up favourite over Da Poupee. Jnrrgle drew number one at the barrier and took the lead out of the straight from Capetown, Grand ivll' 1 \i P ?\ ipee > Lady Pam and • "V rk - Along • lie back at the h.di-mile tiie order was still Juggle, l.i pc town Grand Latin, with La ‘ mi pee, Rady Ram and Full Mark l', 1 .. f ,l Kgle had a break of nee lengths on the iar turn from y, ri ' ” holm and- Capetown. La I on pee aere got a knock arid went T?„ i*°.^ as *- Still with a nice lead •Higgle turned lor home and Grand Rahil went in pursuit, with Full .dark corning „p fast. Full Mark aught and passed the favourite but ould not touch Juggle who had a 'laigm u, one and a half lengths ■ he post. Grand [.aim was one .Kl a. half lengths further back, followed by La Poupee, Capetown nd Rady Ram last. The winner was the outsider of the field. GO RD EX SHADOW EASILY. White Squall dropped out of the lane Hack, leaving eight limners. Fn die best betting race to date Golden Sbado.v was favourite over Lady Ron aid and Golden Chant Reed got Golden Chant away well and in behind came Amin, Thrasher, Golden Shadow, J ov Stick Rady Ronald, Palace and Anemometer. Golden Chant had the adV,’ 11 . e f ar turn from •(.olden Shadow, Acron, Thrasher and Palace who had moved up. When they straightened m> for home Golden Chant was clear of Golden Shadow, Acron, Palace

Lady Ronald, Anemometer and Thrasher. Golden Shadow 'soon had Golden Chant’s measure. Acron, on the rails, came up well and Lady Ronald was being whipped up on the outer. They had no show with, the leaders, however, and Golden Shadow was two lengths to the good at x,he finish. Acron was three-quarters of a length behind Golden Chant and then came Lady Ronald, Palace, Anemometer and Thrasher. A GREAT GALLOPER.

The three in the Electric Handicap went to the post and Aston had two more tickets on than Souchong. There was fairly good support also for Sir Pombal. They got away in line and .Souchong’s great speed carried him to the front. On the far bend he was 2 lengths ahead of Aston with Sir Pombal falling back four lengths further still. As they straightened up Aston could scarcely make any impression on the top-weight till the distance was reached. Fifty yards from the post Aston just drew level with Souchong but Reed shook his mount up. and the Hawke’s Bay flier went away again to have a margin of half a length at the post. Sir Pombal was two lengths back. GRUMPY MAKES RIGHT OF 10.1. The full card of eight started in the five turlong flutter, the Tarai'ua Hack Handicap. For all his weight Grumpy was established a warm iavourite with good support, too, for Foreign Queen and Backston. Grumpy shot out m the lead but Toxmiss (the grey) missed the jump-out. On the far bend Grumpy led l'm Alone, Rackston, Movietone, Bay Area and Mister Quex. Into the straight Grumpy had a good length’s advantage over Lackston, Fill Alone, Mister Quex and foreign Queen being handv behind. Grumpy went on with it like' the good filly she is and Laekston went in pursuit but was two lengths off at the post. Foreign Queen finished strongly into third place, a length back, and then came Mister Qu6x, Joxmiss and I’m Alone, with Bay Area last. Toxmiss ran well after her poor start and tried to get through in the straight but without success. Nothing, however, could have beaten the winner. KALMUK’S TURN.

~T , n Rodney Hack Fine Acre am not tuffil his engagement The , g of an even nature, Red 1 lush finally ending up favourite over Cape Fair. Past the stand and out ot the straight Kalmuk ran to the lead followed by Morrath and Go den Shadow. Along the hack Golden Shadow had charge from Morrath, Kalmuk, Red Flush and Cape Fair. Morrath had displaced Gulden Shadow from the leadership at the five furlong peg and behind them ran Red Flush, Kalmuk, Cape fair (on the rails) and Spearopa moving up. The order into the straight was Morrath, Golden Shadow, Kalmuk, Spearopa, Cape Fan- and Red Fhish In the tussle up the straight Kalmuk was too good for Cape Fair, who got a run on the rails, and just won from the top-weight oy a head. Morrath ?T as , ° n3 i 01 llalf lengths back third and then came Red Flush and LxoJcien Shadow. SPEED TO BURN. l i > i° ,1 rT aI -, dld not start in the Jarewell Handicap so there were three left in the final event of the meeting. Speed was a hot favourite over Lady Spy and duly won in handsome style. Out from the bar-m-t % st showed up but then oV ut ? Squall ran to the front and Speed slipped in behind with Lady Spy handy Lady Spy ran up to Whde S n t n e turn ou * of the back. White Squall appeared to he goinonicely out in the front at the tance with the other two handy to throw out their challenge. When it came AA bite Squall compounded and Speed went past Lady Spy to vin convincingly by one and a quarter lengths, with White Squall three lengths or more back. EVENTS IN HETAIL.
