BOXING CLUB

THE NEXT TOURNAMENT. A meeting of the executive of the Pahiatua Boxing Club was held in the office of the secretary last evening, when there were present: Messrs A. P. Jensen (who presided), T. J. Horne, R. Oxley, F. E. Ward, G. Oxley, S. H. Petherick, lan Taylor, B. H. Wills, C. MeCardle. P. Davies and G. Bailey. A letter was read from AY. Tyree, formerly of this district, and boxing under the name of “Billy Sullivan,” offering to fight Cossill, of Palmerston North, at Pahiatua for a £4O purse, together with an allowance of £2 for expenses, for which he undertook to bring three or four amateur boxers with him from Hastings. The offer was not accepted as it is not the intention of the club to stage any more professional bouts this season. It was resolved to hold a big amateur tournament on Wednesday, July 13th, in the King’s Theatre, and Mr B. U. Wills was appointed to interview the management and make the necessary arrangements. The following officials were appointed : Referee. Air J. P. Evans (Palmerston North) ; timekeeper, Mr G. Oxley; glove stewards. Alessrs AA\ Ryan and C. AlcCardle; announcer, Air F. E. Ward; weight steward. Air A. C. Timms; seconds, Messrs R. Oxlev and E. Sullivan; call stewards, Messrs lan Taylor and S. H. Petherick; ring arrangements, Air AI. Oxley; ushers and doorkeepers, Alessrs G. Oxley, P. Davies, B. Draper, Guy Bailey, J. B. Moynahan and F. Cosford. Alessrs Guy Bailey and B. Draper were appointed canvassers for trophies. A donation of one guinea was received from Air T. J. Horne, and Mr G. Oxley intimated his intention of presenting a trophy for one of the bouts. One or two other members of the executive also promised prizes for the tournament. It was pointed out that a- member s ticket admitted the member to any part »f the theatre, the privilege extending for the whole Reason. The following bouts were arranged : Reeves v. Luttrell, champion of Hawke’s Bay ; Davies v. Cutler (Palmerston North) ; L. Bailey v. Duffy (Masterton) ; AA T . Bailey v. Forbes (Rongotea) ; Alt-Kay v. “Kid” Little (Rongotea) ; Talbot (Masterton) v. AA r . Hopkins (Palmerston North) ; Wheeler (Rongotca) v. Carrig (Masterton); Bellsliaw v. Power (Dannevirke) ; AI. Spring (Nirealia) v. D. Smith (Carterton). Two smart local youngsters, both promising hoys, are to be matched with Eketalmna lads. Reeves’ and Davies’ bouts will be six two-minute rounds. all the others, with the exception of the Cosford-Pratt contest, will be of four two-minutes duration.

The arrangements of the ring were left in the hands of Alessrs G. Oxley, E. H. Lett and G. Ha i lev.
