CONSTABLE ATTACKED
THREE FIREMEN ARRESTED. Electric Telegraph—Press -Association TIMARU, August 21. As the result of a fracas on the waterfront this afternoon three firemen off the overseas vessel Taimri were arrested on a charge of theft of bicycles and assaulting a constable. Other police had to be called before the men were taken in charge. Iwo of the men were in town during tlie afternoon and were seen to take two bicycles and proceed in tlie direction of the port. Tlie owner of one bicycle informed a constable, and the pair followed the men to the wharf, where the constable endeavoured to step them. He secured the bicycles, when the men attacked him. The constable threw one man who was held down by a bystander. A third fireman off the ship, who incited his mates to fight, and a second man made aboard the ship, the constable following them. Further police and a detective arrived on the scene in response to a call, and they also boarded tlie ship, where two men were subsequently arrested. At one period the position looked serious for the constable, but be was able to stand bis ground, and though struck several times he was not injured.
