TAKEN TO TASK

AUCKLAND RACING PRESIDENT STRONG FACTS BY MANAWATU. Electric Telegraph—Frees Association PALMERSTON N., This Day. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club last evening, th© president (Mr Louisson) referred to remarks made by the president of the Auckland Racing. Club regarding Manawatu being represented on the Racing Conference. He stated that although Manawatu ranks as a country club its stakes per day’s racing and totalisator turnover were considerably higher than many metropolitan clubs. If the conference was reconstituted on the basis of these figures, the Manawatu would most certainly rank as a metropolitan club. The stakes for classic races were £IBOO, which ranks the Manawatu club as fifth, only four clubs giving higher stakes for these races. The amount of stakes distributed per day was £2399, which ranks as sixth among racing clubs in the Dominion. The average totalisator turnover per day was _£35,731, which ranks sixth. There are nine metropolitan clubs in the Dominion, all represented on the conference. Of these only Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch give larger stakes and have larger totalisator turnover than the Manawatu. As one of the so-called metropolitan clubs gives as low as £IBB3 per day in stakes, with a daily turnover of £9414, compared with Manawatu, £2399 and £35*731, it proves that the remarks of the Auckland club’s president are mi-, warranted. Wanganui, Dunedin, and Hawke’s Bay, with two representatives each on the conference, show less per day in stakes and totalisator turnover than Manawatu. These facts justified th© Manawatu being represented on the conference.
