REFORM MEETING TO SELECT CANDIDATE FOB PAHIATUA SEAT. An important meeting of all Reform supporters will be held in the Borough Council Chambers on Friday evening, at 7.30 o’clock Th© business will be to select a candidate to contost the Pahiatua seat at the forthcoming general election. It is hoped that a very large and representative gathering will be in attendance. and a specially cordial invitation is extended to the ladies to be present. His Worship' the Mayor (Mr J. D. C. Crewe) will preside. II AMU A FUNCTION. PRIZE DISTRIBUTION AT CATHOLIC SOCIAL. A successful ceremony took place in the Hamua Hall on Monday in connection with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. Little lan Bourke, the youngest of the class, on behalf of his classmates, was deputed by Rev. Father Doherty, of Eketahuna, to present with best wishes, an ascetionl volume and a traveller’s clock to Miss J. McLaughlin! The latter intends to sail for Sydney this week, to attend the great Eucharistic Congress. The recipient feelingly returned thanks for the gifts, and the kindly sentiments expressed. Recent examination in Christian doctrine reached a very high standard, the three highest pupils each scoring 98 per cent. Th© proceeds from the big plain and fancy dress dance organised bv the Pahiatua Ladies’ Hockey Club, which will take iplace in the Foresters’ Hal] to-morrow (Wednesday) evening, will b e devoted to the Bush Ladies’ Hockey Association and the staunch support of every hockey enthusiast in the district is solicited. Wi Duncan’s popular orchestra will provide the music and all other arrangements will be in keeping with the gathering. RUGBY FOOTBALL. JUNIOR COMPETITION ENDS. By drawing with Newman on Saturday Southern United won the junior championship for 1928 by a margin of one point. The draw for the junior Cowan Cup on Saturday next is as follows: Southern United v. Rongomai. at Newman : Alakuri v. Newman, at Pahiatua Recreation Ground. ODDFELLOWS’ LODGE. N.C. Bro. L. Angelini presided over a good attendance of members at the quarterly meeting of Loyal Mangatainoka Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., held last evening. The meeting stood in silence as a mark of respect to th© memory of the late Bro. J. Brown. Correspondence was received from the Druids’ Lodge regarding a proposed combined Friendly Societies’ dance. P.G. Bros. J. Taylor and L. Kitchen were appointed to attend a meeting of delegates. Loyal Dannevirk© Lodge of Past Grands invited Past Grand officers to attend their meeting on Monday next. Several members agreed to journey to Dannevirke, A visiting brother who attended was welcomed by brethren. After much routine business was transacted the lodge was formally closed.
