FEEDING THE WORLD'S BIGGEST FAiVIiL 1. Every day in the year Dr. Bernardo’s Homes have to think about food. Their family numbers nearly 8000 boys and gills and babies and all of these require three meals a day. Some of them need the extra <Uet of the invalid child or the young baby. There are 3,700 boyis and girls of school age, with the healthy appetite of youth. In order to supply the wants of this large family, which equals a town in size, the Homes aro appealing for 400,000 half-crowns as birthday gifts in memory of the late Dr. Barnardo. Economy is the guiding principle of the Homes in all tlieir work. But every house-mother knows that you cannot economise' on the food of children, without detriment to their health. The Barnardo family needs 24,000 meals a day: 168,000 meals a week: 8,736,000 meals a year. Bread is a large item. 1,600 loaves are baked daily by the lads in the. Barnardo bakehouse. But this supplies only about three-eights of the family. Alilk is another large item in the daily menu. 1,000 gallons per dry are required. The Charter of the Homes is “No Destitute Child Ever Refused Admission.” On an average 5 children are admitted daily. Under this Charter over 105,000 children have been admitted, cared for, educated and trained and placed out in the world as Al citizens instead of C3’is. Over 30,000 have been sent to the British Dominions, thus helping to. people the. British Empire overseas with British born.
