MOTOR SMASH
DEFENDANT CONVICTED.
In the Magistrate's Court at Masteiton a fortnight ago, Aaron Tuckett, road overseer for the Castlepoiut County Council, was charged, before Mr S. L. P. Free, S.M., with breaches of the Motor Vehicles Act. One charge was that he was under the influence of liquor while in charge of a car, and a second charge was that he had driven a car at a speed dangerous to the public or to a person. At the conclusion of the evidence, the Magistrate reserved his decision, stating that in the meantime he would inspect the car that went over the bank. Last week Mr Free delivered his judgment. He said that he was satisfied that at the time of the accident defendant had, through taking intoxicating liquor, lost normal control of his bodily and mental faculties. After reviewing the evidence at some length, Mr Free said that on the first charge defendant would lie convicted and fined £lO. Defendant’s driver’s license is to lie produced within seven days for the purpose of having the conviction endorsed upon it. Court costs 11s, and witness’s expenses £2 Is were allowed against defendant. The second charge against defendant was withdrawn.
