FUSION FAILURE
NO OFFICIAL STATEMENT
“INSUPERABLE DIFFICULTIES.”
(Special Correspondent) WELLINGTON, This Day
Contrary to members’ expectations, the Hon. J. G. Coates did not announce the failure of fusion negotiations to-day, but members of both parties made iu> secret of the fact that the matter is ended. The Liberal Leader had written to the Prime Minister in the weekend, requesting an early decision, and it is understood some further difficulties in the way were then enumerated, those having been answered.
The Liberal Leader is stated to have received a communication from the Hon. J. G. Coates, which shows that in the opinion of the Reform Party the difficulties which remain are practically insuperable
The Liberals held that they have been more than generous in oon, cessions. and nothing more could he expected oi' them. No more suggestions will come from the Liberals.
It is stated therefore the puhiio will at a very early date be acquainted with what has been discussed privately for so long by the politicians, who will leave them to judge who is mainly responsible for the failure to bring the parties into line.
