FAMOUS ENGLISH DUELS.
Up to 1843 duelling was recognised as an obligation of honour in England but in 1844 the War Office took steps to put a stop to this method of 'Settling quarrels, among ann.v officers The following year, however, a fatal duel—the last on record in England—was fought between Lieutenants Set--011 and Hawkey, being killtd. Afemorabie English duels of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were Lord Byron killed Air Oh a worth in 1765; Charles James'"Fox aril Air Adams fought in 1779; Duke of York and Colonel Lennox in 1789; William Pitt and George Tierney in 1796. George Canning and Lord. Castlerengli in 1809; Duke of Wellington and Karl of Winchilsea in 1829.
