THE COUNTY COUNCIL.

(To the Editor.)

Sir. - Your report of the discussion of the County Council when the matter of tho election of a chairman was under review makes very sad reading. Perhaps tin* fact that you made no comment upon it is sadder than ■over. Hut tlie Herald has a function to perform in this community which jio individual or institution can. as suocesstuily carry out, —which is, to a correct perspective will to ull who brave the danpublic life. If a man fails to realise his duty to the community, or an institution fails to carry out the functions it was launched to perform, then it is the duty of the Public Press to see that men and institutions are reminded of their duty. If they do not improve their methods then the J*ress should secure an answer to the question “Why?”, and never rest until it lias secured either a satisfactory answer or a change in

personnel. Let Mr Mathews and Mr Cornelius resign their seats and contest one or other of the ridings they represent ; the man who is defeated to retire into private life for five years, and they man who wins give a “fiver” to the hospital and settle down to do all in his power to pull the Pahiatua County and Borough out of the •slough of despond into which they are plunged. We can do without either Air Cornelius or ATr Mathews, and we might quite justifiably keep our tails up without both. A great deal of interest would be manifested in a square “go” between them, and they would be doing a public service by accepting my suggestion to give it a “go.” Gentlemen, are you listening? I am, etc., CONST ANT RFA DER. (Wo have eliminated from our correspondent’s letter certain expressions which we regarded as entirely unnecessary to the subject under discussion.—Ed. P.H.]
