SHUNTING FATALITY
BAD SYSTEM DISCLOSED
Electric Telegraph—Press Association Wellington, Last Night. .An inquest touching the death of James riopkirk. engine-driver, who died in the Wellington Hospital ou December 18th, as tin- result of injuries sustained through the collision ot two engines at the Thomdon railway. yardfc, was held to-day. ‘Evidence was given by Signalman Campbell that he gave the line clear to Driver Lucas but the engine driven ".v deceased came up ou a parallel line behind Lucas. Although ho gave out the danger signal it was not notict<l m time to avoid a collision. W ituess stated that frequently shunt—mg engines failed to observe the siga,, d he had often saved serious accidents. The Coroner gave a verdict that.deceased had ditxl from the result of shock and injuries, but was unable to say that anyone was to blame for the accident* He thought the system disclosed hv the evidence should be altered.
