VARIOUS MATTERS DECIDED

the ordinary monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council was held last night. Then.- were present— The Mayor (Mr J. D. C Crewe), and Crs. D. P. Davidson. A. Weston. T. \\ Manifold. W. 1. Husband. L T. Herbert, A. Ross and T. F. Hewat. Apologies for ulisence were received on behalf of Cts. \\ . J. Palmer and J. D. Wilson.

The application of Mrs Neal for the use of the Council Chamber for meetings of tHe Medical Corps (NWfcitmal Reserve) was granted.

Mr C. F. Taylor applied for a bridge across the drain near his property' in Cambridge street eart. Cr. Weston, who raised the question of precedent and liability in the event ol accident, moved that the request be not granted, but the motion lapsed for want of a seconder. The Mayor then moved, and Or. Davidson seconded .that the request Ik- granted, the owners of the property to maintain the bridge. ()n « division, the motion was carried, the dissentients being Or>. Weston and Ross. The last-named <aid a bridge was nec.-s----sarv. but it was a question of who should erect it. the Council or the property-owner.

The application of the Pahiatua Farmers Association for sanitary drainage connection to their offices at the sahwards in Tyndall street was granted

The Swimming Club was granted permission to use the Borough liaths for a children's carnival, on certain conditions.

A letter from tin* custodian of the public liaths. recommending an alteration in the liotus during which the baths were open, was referred to the Baths Committee, with j lower to act.

Cr. Manifold suggested that a uns - table should be. posted for tin- herefit of the public at the entrance to the baths.

The overseer reported that the metalling of fifteen chains of footpath and other work on Tiraume* road had been completed; noxious weeds had been cleared on the Recreation Ground; the flood uater scheme it* W akeman street was now in hand; the lower portion of the Huxley street drain was being attended to. Tlie town creek also required cleaning out. Over 1000 gallons of tar for footpaths had come to hand*. Metal repairs and other work had been effected in various streets.

Tbe Works. Committee reported that the question of upkeep of tbe town . squares had been considered, and it was decided to leave the inhtter in abeyance until lwfcer in tbe season. the present cost being less than the offers received. The Committee had inspected tbe Borough traffic bridge, and as the structure rt>quires redecking. it ha* i*x>n decided to obtain prices tor hard wood timber from the Public Works Department. The Committee had *Wi inspected the works completed within tthe past month and found everything m a satisfactory state. Accounts totalling £243 10s 6d were leased for payment.
