The Herald. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1916 THE PERSONAL APPEAL.

Despite the cheerfulness of Mr .Massey as to the backing he expects from patriotic organisations and local bodies, the new recruiting scheme, in which the personal appeal and the issuing of badges are to be important factors, is going to be seriously handicapped from the outset, and it is doubtful whether the effort will get a fair chance. Public opinion is sharply divided on the question of voluntary and compulsory enlistment. The advocates of

voluntaryism, although prepared to admit, inequalities under the system, vwro wiling to exhaust nil methods before giving up their ideal as hopeless. On the otlictt hand, the eotnpo'sionists sue only futility in any attempt to put off wliat they consider to he inevitable, and apparently will not at tlii*. stage give a lid ml in any effort that may bring about the success of voluntaryism. Consequently the Recruiting Hoard will shutoff in conflict, w ith at least a. portion of the local representatives whose aid’ in the campaign would have been helpful. Instead thet'o will he opposition and condemn;.!ton. It is apparent, of course, that the personal appeu-I introduces n dedicate element, and the person undertaking the task must, not only [Xisxess t.lct and resources, but must have pluced himself in the position of giving htn a. right to approach his fellows to make the supremo sacrifice. Workers with

such qualifications will probably not; be found to be very numerous, and. in any event not many will be prepared to accept such service. If there are many more resolutions of protest against the scheme by local j bodies the Recruiting Board will no doubt be compelled to re-consider the matter. A good deal of energy and . time, to say nothing of expense, has . been devoted to the formulation and organisation of the scheme, and it will be unfortunote if the labour and cost are wasted! without anv return.

PA HI AT U A’S ANNUAL SHOW, i The officials who gratuitously give their time and ability in advancing the interests of the local A. & P. Association deserve the support of the community at the annual show tomorroAV. Such an Association, when controlled By enthusiasts, is of considerable value in a farming district, j L 4-Uo. benefiting tlie> town els well as trios© j on the land, and the Pahiatua Association has a creditable record to show for its few years of existence. It has acquired an excellent ground, to Avhicli necessary improvements are being made as finances permit, and a comprehensive schedule is submitted to bring out the competition that is such a useful factor in advancing the breed of stock Avith all the attendant* advantages. If the

circumstances under which the show is being held this year have militated against an incr ease in erP. •»«, it is satisfactory to know that there will be a fine general display of good quality, which should draAV a record
