BUTTER AND CHEESE FIRM

The High Commissioner's cable, dated London, February 5, state*: Meat: There is a better demand for New Zealand mutton and lamb k on account of the decrease in the amount of Home killed, but there is no change in prices. Only New Zealand cow beef is available, and i> selling at. hinds tipi, fores s§d; chilled hinds 7*d. fores 6pi. Butter: The market is quiet, but firm. Danish is quiet at 156 sto 158 s. Tiie New Zealand spot market is firm, owing to short supply at 150 s to !525; nnsalted ltiils to 168 s. The Australian market is firm owing to reduced supplies at 144 sto HRs. h Siberian there is better demand for lest quality a.t 124 sto 1325; Argentine is steady at 140 s to 1445. Cheese: The market i* steady and holders firm. Canadian is very firm, white and coloured 99s to 100 s; New Zealand white and coloured 98s. United States is in fair demand at 90s to 98s; English C heddar 106 s to 108 s, Cheshire 114 s to 120 s. On February 1 the esrirnabsl Canadian and United States cheese stock* in London. Liverpool and Bristol were- 124,000 boxes, as against 81.000 at the same time last year. The New Zealand and Australian stocks were 21,000 icrato-,, as against 22.700 last year.

Wool : The sales closed strong with the market booming on account of small supply. Manufacturers are busy on Government contracts, and only a small quantity of New Zealand new clip was offered. Future prospects are good.
