SETTLER FATALLY INJURED.

A tragic affair occurred at Eonini about 7.30 o’clock last iiight whereby a well known dairy farmer, Mr John Ambrose Bradley, milking with his family on shares for Mr M. A 1 pass, lost his life. It appears that after milking, time last evening the deceased went down the paddock, some 300 or 400 yards away, to get a Jersey bull. He was leading the animal in front by a chain, as had been his usual custom, and when about 20 or thirty yards from the cowyard the bull suddenly* charged Mr Bradley from behind, and knocked him down, and proceeded to gore and trample ou the unfortunate man. _ A nine year old son, standing inside the gate of tlie cow yard, witnessed the occurrence and commenced pelting stones at the bull. Mrs Bradley came out, and a little later two neighbours, Messrs Ryan and Sewell, also arrived on the scene. Mr Slewed! was armed with a hay fork, while Mr Ryan tackled the bull with an axe. This determined assault caused the animal to shift his quarters, but in the meantime Mr Bradley had sustained shocking injuries. When rescued and examined it was found that one leg had been broken In three places, the abdomen and neck were frightfully mutilated, and his clothes were ripped to threads. The ground in the vicinity was also torn up by the infuriated animal. Deceased was conscious for a. few minutes, and called for a drink which Mrs Bradley gave him. He also recognised and spoke to others near him. Medical aid was immeediately summoned from Pahiatua. but Mr Bradley died from his injuries in the meanwhile. Tlie body was removed to the Pahiatua Morgue. An inquest was held at the Court House this afternoon.

The deceased was aged 52 years and leaves a family of four. One sou is on active service, and another one had enlisted. The family*, who came from the Old Country some years ago, formerly lived at Mangaliao. It is stated that deceased had previously been warned that the bull was not to be trusted. The animal was one which he intended exhibitng at the Pahiatua Show.
