Inoueye, in replying, said he was gratified at the references to Japan’s services in convoying overseas troops, and l added: “Japan has participated in the struggle not merely because of her desire to fulfil the alliance obligations, but to join hands with you in upholding the cause of humauity and civilisation.’’ The souvenir marked the cordial friend, smp which he hoped would always exist between the Japan<’*e Navy and the New Zealand forces
