A fire broke out in the main grandstand on the show ground whereon there were over a thousand people who quickly cleared. Before the five miles distant fire brigade arrived the fire had spread to the exhibition portion causing great excitement among the large crowds. There was a poor water supply and the fire was not suppre-sed until eighteen structures, including the Industrial Pavilion and great quantities of valuable exhibits besides the grandstand costing £70,000 were destroyed.
