DISTRICT NOTES.

EKETAHUNA. The annual m%ting of the Tararua Rifle Club was held last weet. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mr J. Petersen; secretary and treasurer, Mr j, R. Tliomasen; deputy-president, Mr J. Wilson; handficapper, Mr J. Petersen ; auditor, Mr F. H. Dowden. The president, secretary, deputy-president i and Messrs T. Daysli and Rowyer were appointed a management committee. .The Express; states that the. j balance-sheet showing a credit balance of £25 Is 9d was read and adopted, and it was decided to open the season on Saturday, October 3rd. Mr J. B. Wilson was appointed offi- . cer in charge of drill instruction. An old identity of the Forty-Mile Bush passed away on Friday last in the person of Mr F. W. Dowsett, J.P., of Newman. The deceased, who was seventy-three years of age, arrived at Wellington in 1857, and was for a number of years engaged in the bakery business. He was chairman of the Ivarori-Makara Road Board, and afterwards opened a store on the Terawliiti gold-fiells. In 1880 he went to Newman with bis family, where he occupied the position of postmaster and registrar of births, deaths and marriages. He was chairman of the Newman Domain Board, and for a number of veal’s a member lof the Eketahuna County Council. He was also a prominent horticulturist. His funeral took place at Newman on Sunday.

The hockey match between Eketahuna and Wairarapa teams, played at Carterton, resulted in a win for Wairarapa by two goals to one.
