EXTRAORDINARY OCCURANCE.

STRAW AND OAT STACKS SET ON FIRE. Electric Telegraph—Cross Association. Gore, July 28. A rather extraordinary occurrence is reported from lliversdale. This morning a number of fires were observed over the plain, and a settler making investigation saw a man deliberately setting fire to several straw stacks. The settler obtained assistance. but in the meantime the man reached the next farm, and set fire to three oat sheaf stacks, also several straw stacks. The two victims met and secured him. In all lie burnt fifteen stacks valued at over £4OO. The man was brought to Gore tonight for medical examination, seemingly being a lunatic. He arrived in this district several days ago and is a trout fifty years of age. He gives bis name as George Murray, and states that he lias a wife and three children in Dunedin.
