HAYWOOD ACQUITTED. Electric Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. New York, July 29. \V. D. Haywood has been acquitted cif the murder of Steuenberg. ( Xhe jury deliberated for 21 hours. Hi the first ballot eight supported an acquittal, and four favoured a verdict involving some degree of murder. but the minority was won over during the night. Haywood, on leaving the dock, thanked each juryman. No demonstration was made. It is understood that the cases against Moyer and Pettibone will be abandoned. VERDICT A COMPLETE SCRPRISE London, July 28. The Times' New York correspondent says that doubtless Orchard will be tried and made to pay the penalty of his crimes. The correspondent adds that Haywood’s exoneration implies the exoneration of the entire inner circle of the Western Miners’ Federation. The verdict was a complete surprise. (In 19C6. Charles H. Moyer, president of the Western Federation of Miners, William D. Haywood, secretarv. and George A. Pettibone, an exmember of the Executive Board, were arrested at Denver as accessories to the dynamiting and murdering of Air Frank Steuenberg, ex-Governor for Idaho. It was alleged that revenge tormer prosecutions prompted the murder. Shortly afterwards a man named Harry Orchard was arrested in connection with the murder. He declared that he received from Moyer and another official of the Federation £760 for the murder of Steu-c-nberg. After much delay the accused persons were put on trial. Harry Orchard confessed that lie was promised three thousand dollars to kill Governor Steuenberg. He tied a bomb to Steuenberg's gate, and it exploded with ratal results. He had planned twenty-six murders tor the inner circle of the f\ e-tern lederation of Aliners.) A COSTLY TRIAL. i Received this day at 7.32 a.m.) London. July 29.
