PAHIATUA MOUNTED RIFLES

ANNUAL BALL.

Over two hundred hearts beat liapI ily. This paraphrase on tlie time-uo.i. cured Byronic quotation will fittingly describe the feelings of those ladies and gentlemen who were present in the Drill Hall last night on the occasion of the annual social gathering—the ball of the season—in connection with tlie Pahiatua Alounted Rifles. The hue, capacious hall was made most attractive by the display of bunting from the ceiling, the walls being also decorated with flags and evergreens. In the centre of the room was a raised platform on which Hanley's string hand, from Palmerston North, discoursed sweet music, to the evident delight of the devotees of Terpsichore and to those whose dancing days are over, but who rejoice to see others enjoying themselves in the mazy waltz, the lively lancers, or the seductive schottisehe. The hall was opened shortly after 8 p.m. with the grand march and lancers (Jeannette), and in tlie former tlie spectators were enabled to see to good advantage the beautiful dresses of the ladies and the soldiers of the King in a variety of uniforms, the whole forming a most pleasing tout ensemble. Space will not permit of our publishing a list of those ladies and gentlemen who were present, nor detailed descriptions of tlie dresses and uniforms worn by them respectively. The official set was as follows:—The Alayor (Air D. Crewe) and Airs T. P. XVills, Alajor Bolton and the Alayoress (Airs D. C’rewe), Captain T. P. AA’ills and Airs Burgess. Lieutenant-Adjutant Nelson and Airs Tosswill. Captain AlcKillop and Airs Wyvern AA’ilson. Lieut. Bolton and Aliss Bolton. Lieut. Sturton and Aliss AA’ills, Lieut. Procter and Aliss Armit. AleTavish, who worked like Trojans to ensure the success of tLe gathering, and who telt amply rewarded upon seeing that their efforts were heartily appreciated. An especial word of praise is due Captain AVills, who not only superintended operations, but suited the word to the action end the action to the word in assisting to carry out all those many details that have to be attended to il success is to crown the united efforts of all workers. The floor had been specially prepared for so auspicious an occasion, and tlie ballroom not being uncomfortably crowd- ; ed with good music, rendered dancing most enjoyable.
