DISTRICT NEWS.
From our own Correspondents. Mangatainoka.
It was quite a gala day here on Tuesday last in celebration of the Record Reign. The school children assembled at tho Hall about 12.30 and inarcliod in procession to the Domain, headed by the chairman of the school committee (Mr J. Polglase), who was assisted by Miss Wilson and members of the committee. They halted in the centre of the Domain and sang the National Anthem, and wero* dismissed. Then games of various kinds were indulged in. No less than three footballs were in motion from one o’clock till dusk. A number of races for hooks, toys, lollies, etc., were run. Mr De Loree was present and photographed a considerable portion of those present. Mr Polglase held the handsome testimonial which is to be presented to Mr J. B. Rose, the late secretary to the committee Mr Rose not putting in an appearance it was decided to make the presentation in the Public Hall in the evening. This also had to be abandoned owing to Mr Rose not turning up. The testimonial is on view in Mrs J. 11. Waiker’s shop window. It is a credit to Mr W. Bock, of Wellington. The work gave everyone who saw it great satisfaction. Messrs Graham Smeaton and H. Firmstone attended to the tea and coffee, and Mesdames Cade, Polglase, Wiles and Anderson attended to the eatables, aud (as it should be) the little ones were well attended to. Messrs J. Polglase, E. M. Herrick, London, and the popu ar Geo. Polglase were ever on the alert to ad-
minister to their requirements. Messrs Wiles, London, Martin,, and J. H. Walker attended to the various races. An apple eating contest was supervised by Messrs Polglase and Boult. This was won by Georgina Smeaton. Mr Sheary was kept busy as referee for a section of the footballers, and Mr R. Cade officiated as gate-keeper. About 5 o’clock the largest picnic ever held in the district broke up, everyone vowing they had thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A display of fireworks was given by Captain Richardson, after which all adjourned to the hall to 6ee the magic lantern display given by Mr De Loree, which was much appreciated by all. The room was then cleared for a dance, which was kept up until 11 o’clock. The music was supplied by Miss McDowall, of Palmerston North, and was much appreciated.
