OUR WOODYILLE LETTER.

(From our own Correspondent). Several people having expressed regret that your Herald does not belong to our town, it struck me that the next best thing was a weekly letter hence my contribution. Woodvillians are at present in rather a state of alarm. Mr Nicholson’s chemist’s shop was broken into on Tuesday night ami tho till robbed of a small amount. A chisel was dropped, tho burglar having evidently been alarmed by the til) bell. An attempt hail also been mado to enter tiie Road Board office and Horne's blacksmith’s shop. The chisel found has been identified by Mr Lemon, It is supposed that the robbery occurred while our nightwatchman was having a peep at tho volunteer ball. The work looked like a wellplanned affair. Had the man been able to get tools from Horne’s, a few more tills might have been robbed. Record Reign celebrations were loyally carriid out here. Special services in the churches, sports, and ball. Tho town was lighted on Tuesday night, every window in some of the houses and shops have a light placed therein. A concert in aid of tho library held on Monday night was fairly well attended. lum HDrry I cannot say much for tho behaviour of the audience. The appearance of one gentleman (who seemed to bo manager), was the signal for a regular outburst of rude remarks, howling, and whistling. It is quite timo such conduct should be severely punished.

A pleasing feature of the sports was the presentation by Mrs O’Meara of a handsome bracelet, given by Mr John Harris, and won by Master Lloyd in tho obstacle race. Great amusement was caused by the leap frog competition. Several ladies took charge of the refreshments, and on the wb do everyono went homo feeling tlmt they had had a good day’s pleasure. I notice our new Methoilist Minister, Mr Ferryman, has returned with Ins bride, and if good wishes avail him anything ho should bo well off. Tim Rev. Mr Soltau will conduct a mission hero during tho coming week.

The tirebell has just rung out a peal, the chimney in Mr Ferryman’s house being alight. No damage has been done, the brigade turning out in quite a “ Record ” stylo. Those from your district who so kindly journeyed to Woodville on tho IStb to help in a concert in aid of a family iu distress, will be glad to

learn that close on £ll has been handed over. Considering the number of other calls on the public, the result must be gratifying to those concerned. I hear that the Club Hotel is changing hands, a Mr Ryan being the purchaser. He takes possession on Saturday. Mr Ruddick will be much missed.

You are to be congratulated upon the improvement shown in your paper. One man to-day was quite astonished to hear that the latest cable news appeared in tho Pahiatua Herald. I trust ho may recover. Our Member, Mr O’Meara, who has been away in Wellington on parliamentary biz, returned yesterday afternoon.
