BALLANCE.

An Enjoyable Social. One of the most pleasing features of the social life in this district i 3 the ready response made by people in different centres to requests for assistance in carrying out socials, concerts etc,, instituted for the purpose of raising funds for sundry local objects. The reciprocal feature is particularly prominent in the rela tions existing between Ballance and Pahiatua. Ever since the former settlement was founded the same laudable friendly feeling has existed and many pleasant and prolitable evenings have been spent together, and those wbo wish to see progress of tho highest and noblest character will wish that tho same' relations will continue. On Wednesday evening a number of ladies and gentlemen journeyed out to Ballance to assist at a social given in aid of the organ fund. MrJob Vile placed a coach at the disposal of the visitors and Mr W. Vile also drove a full load in his comfortable brougham with two horses, which on arrival at Ballance reminded them of the city. These two gentlemen are to be commended for their generosity in placing their conveyances at the disposal of the visitors gratis. A large audience assembled in tho church and the Rev. Mr‘Beggs took charge of the proceedings. The main features of the programme were the item 3 sung by the Ballance choir under theconductorship of Mr Anderson, the head master of the local school The choir numbers from 15 to 20 voices and considering the comparatively short time the choir have had the several pieces under practice the singing was highly meritorious. With the present conductor, the fine toned organ, and the capable organist, Mrs Saywell. the Ballance choir, given reasonable time and regular practice, will be equal to any kindred oiganisation in the district. The cht ir gave six anthems during the evening, several of which were catchy and difficult, but each one was highly appreciated. The following ladies and gentlemen also contributed items :—Mesdames Eaton, Judd and Vile, Miss Sinclair, Mr Cooper and the Rev. Mr Beggs. At the conclusion of the programme Mr Anderson, in a happy speech, moved a vote of thanks to the Pahiatua contingent for their assistance, and expressed the hope that the friendly relationship between Pahiatua and Baliance would never die. The Rev. Mr Beggs also moved a hearty vote of thanks to the choir for the valuable assistance which it had given. Both resolutions were carried amidst applause. Before separating coffee and solids were handed round by the ladies and these items were not appreciated the least of the evening's programme. Tho refreshments were in abundance and spoke volumes for the hospitality of the Ballance folk.
