Methodist Church Anniversary.

A social was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening to oelebrate the anniversary of the establishment of the Methodist Church in Pahiatua. There was a large attendance of the members of the congregation and their friends, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves and fully appreciated tho efforts made to entertain them. The proceedings commeneed with the singing of a hymn by the choir, and then the Rev Penney from Woodville offered up a short prayer. The choir then rendered achorusin really first-class style, the voices blending well. Mrs Knewstubb sang a solo very nicely, and Mr Mackinlay followed with a reading, and having to respond to an encore favoured with an amusing reading from one of Mark Twain’s works. A duet by the Misses Wells was given with much expression. The llev. Mr Griffin then called on the Rev. Mr Philip to deliver a short address. The reverend gentlemen gave an entertaining and instructive address to the young people present. A duet by Mesdames Redman and Barraolough was rendered very nicely and was well received. The item to conclude the first half was given by the choir, and as before was successfully rendered. Refreshments were then handed round by a number of Indies, whom Mesdames Vile and Griffin kept supplied from tables at the end of the hall, which were heavily weighted with the good things provided. After everyone present had done justice to the eatables the choir rendered another chorus. A solo by Miss Watson was the next item, and as usual this lady did full justice to her contribution. Mrs and Miss Mills then sang a duet. This item was one of the best of the evening and was heartily applauded. The Rev. Penney then delivered a short and interesting address. The Misses Wells contributed another duet, which was as successfully given as the first. This item was followed by a duet by Miss and Mr Finch which proved very enjoyable. Mrs Knewstubb’s solo was the last, and then the choir gave another chorus, which proved a fitting ending to a most pleasant evening’s enjoyment. The committee of ladies must be complimented on the excellence of the viands provided. Miss Finch and Mrs Barraolough accompanied during the evening in a very able manner.
