As you have not had much from this quarter lately a line or two perhaps once in a way may not prove uninteresting to the readers of your journal. The announcement that the Government cannot legally change the perpetual leu.se to that of the 999 years' lease has caused quite a llutter amongst the perpetual lease holders. Strange, is it not, that the Hon. Jock McKenzie only discovered that he could not legally chaage the tenure to the “ long lease" till aftor he had granted that lease to a number of perpetual lease holders ? To my mind the position seem.to be the Minister of Lands has granted a lease which ho finds now lie had no power to legally giant, and to grant that lease lie had to cancel the perpetual lease, so that now the settlers arc in the position of holding a lease which the Minister says lie had no power to grant, and the old lease which lie had power to grant he has cancelled. Of course the matter must be put right as at present it is manifestly unfair to grant the long lease to some and place other settlers who took up their holdings on the same conditions at a disadvantage by having to comply with the conditions of the “ perpetual lea so.” Donald Dinnie and his variet; "or.ipanv performed hare on Tuesday . \ last.
