House of Representatives.
The House met st '2.30. In reply to a question it was statsd it I would be impossible to bring the session to a slose before the second week in October; that the Government could not take the initiative in holding a grand national exhibition of arts, manufactures, and industries; that it was not desirable owing to the prevalence ef phylloxera in Australia to remove the prohibition ou irn- , ported grapes into the colony ; that the j (.overament hoped during the recess to! fame a sc hern*' to improve the audit system of the colony. Mr Montgomery resumed the debate on the second reading of the Government Advances to Settler* Bill, speaking in support of the measure. Mr bethie opposed the Bill as a dan gerous one. Messrs Hogg. Buick, Willis, Moateith supported the principle of the Bill, hut urged several committee objection*, chiefly that the maximum of loans should be fixed at a less sum than £SOOO. The debate was interrupted by the 5.80 adjournment. The House resamsd at 7.30. Mr Hell severely criticised the Govern meal advances to Settlers’ Bill. Mr G. W. Russell strongly supported the Bill, which he said would make or break the Liberal party in New Zealand. Mr Crowther snid the success of the Bill depended on its administration. Mr Maelm, although he objected to several features of the Bill would vote for the second reading to affirm its prineiple. Mr Allen opposed the Bill because it would increase the public debt, arid Messrs Saunders, O’Began, and Earnshaw opposed it because of its borrowing features. Messrs Wi Pere, Duncan, W. Hutchison. Pirani, Graham, B. McKenzie, Hall Jones, l arata, Hall, an 1 Harris supported the Bill, aad Messrs \J*»*ev. Buehanau, and Thompson opposed it. Mr Ward in the course of his reply said since these proposals came down, private individuals ware offering moony at five and a half per cent, thus showing they were Assuring cheap money already. The second reading was agrseci te on the veiees. 'I he House rose at 5.35. A bill in connection with the Odd isllow-t Lodge at Mangalainoka will be held on Wednesday, October 3rd. The Public ilall at Mangatainoka will he opened on Friday evening next, when kftj’- proprietor will give a dance, particu lare of which will be feu id elsewhere.
