Public Meeting at Makuri.
A largely attended public meeting was held at tlie Makuri Hotel on the 15th inst., Mr C. W. Tvlee in the chair. In the matter of erecting a Public Hall, correspondence from Lands Department and Mr Hogg. M.H.R., was read, and a committee composed of Messrs Tylee, Murphy, Berry, and Tucker was appointed to get out subscription lists. The sum of Jill has been already promised. lie Telephone. The action of the Telephone Department was questioned, and it was generally agreed that the assumption by the Department of an anticipated revenue of only £*2B per annum was erroneous, and that a telephone service here would pay at once. A motion as follows was carried unanimously:— ‘That a vote of thanks be tendered to Mr Hogg, for his action in this acd other matters, and that he be farther requested to urge on the Government the necessity of a telephone service to Makuri in the interests of a very large and fully settled district, and that this meeting of settlers is ef opinion that the work would fully pay its expenses and interest on cost straight awav. Also to further point out the many difficulties in the working of the subsidy system, in so far as it would relate to those subscribing, and afterwards departing from the district would have their claims for four years in the hands of the Government, thereby furnishing both trouble and probable loss."
