Accident to the Rotomahana.
The Rotomahana, which left V\ ellington at 4.15 on Thursday afternoon, did not arrival at Lyttelton till 4.45 on Friday, afternoon owing to a break down of her engines when the vessel was off Kaikoura. Temporary repairs were affected by tho engine-room staff, which enabled the steamer to be brought to Lyttelton. She left for Dunedin on Friday night where tho necessary repairs will be effected. A telegram was received in Wellington on Saturday from Captain McGee, of the Tasmania, stating that at midnight on Thursday when about *JO miles south-west of Kaikoura, he observed the Rotomahana burning blue lights and firing rockets. Ho turned the vessel s head round to render assistance to to Rotomahana if necessary. Captain Allon, of the latter vessel, however. signalled that no urgent assistance was required, and that he expected to be able to resume the voyage in three or four | hoars.
