OUR DRAINAGE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —There are a number of creeks emptying into the Mak&kahi and Mangatainoka rivers whioh are being polluted m a disgraceful wav, and which 1 have myseif inspected, so as to put a stop to the pollution. Amongst those X have inspected is one running through the Borough of Pahiatua. My report showing what 1 found m this creek, and wnat 1 found drained into it, would not be lit for the public press. I therefore leave your readers to imagine what *ort of a con* tamination they are surrounded with. In plain English they are living on the banks of a main sewer in the shape of a creek, which is carrying away everything that is objectionable. Alongside of tlus open sewer are houses, and the inhabitants thereof are breathing in the delicious air arising from it, and not only are they doing this, for I will go further and say that numbers arc drinking its waters, and u*ing it for their houses believing it to be pure. ** What the eve doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve.” Some few tears ago if I am not mistaken typhoid broke out in the vicinity 1 refer to, and the mystery to me is why it is not always breaking out. Wellington even with its proper drainage used to be a fearful place for typhoid and diphtheria, bat it never had an open cess pool of tilth like we have in Pahiatua. How delightful it must be to drink water impregnated to the highest degree with typhoid germs. Ignorance is indeed b.iss here. Well, Mr Editor, some of your

readers may scoff at the facts I state .a this letter. Let those that srodf remember this letter when they are laid low with typhoid and diphtheria. Ido not ask tha j inhabitants of Pahiatua to take the matter up tjr I am going to stop it myself, but I rihouid like tb*ui to traverse the creek from, say, Mr Vile's paddock to the County j Council Chambers and examine it for ■ themselves. In my capacity as honorary ranger of the Wellington Acclimatisation

Society and honorary secretary of tu* sub* committee of the Wellington Acclimatise* ; i.on Society, I have received instructions I to take proceedings aga nst all persona | that are polluting our streams and rivers. . I hi.ve already served the Borough Council ' witn notice to stop the polutioc of the | creek, and if they don't I shall at once I proceed against the several individuals who are concerned for, a two fold reason. I Firstly : The creek is a disgrace, a scandal, . and a forerunner of disease. Secondly : It is distinctly contrary to the regulations i under the Conservation Act.—l am. etc., DUXCIX PtCELL.
