A Few Remarks on the Representative Match

XV.< The honor and glorv of winning this match having been taken io the Wairarap i, it is not my intention to say anything regarding the victors further than that they fudy deserved the vie tor >. They plated an up hill gamo well, and finished the match as cricketers should, but at the same time I am fully convinced that the best team did uot win. Now, in my opinion, the Pahiatua County lost tho match through lack of judgment in running between the wickets. Smith, and Chambers (good batsmen, they all arc and were well set) ail run out. A schoolboy would not have attempted the run for l which Chambers started Reeve had l p ent.v of time to get home if he had only run his first runs fast without dwelling at the wickets every turn, and fast tiiau as Smith is between the wickets, he was out over a yard in a straight rim. Now- I think in the Pahiatua team there is too much “ backing and filling," too much com ng an 1 go hacking between tho wickets, particularly at critical times in a match Whoever calls ought first quickly and without hesitation decide what to do, then call and go like players. In fart, if player* know each other. I think a sneaked or stoleu run is much better done in silence, by a beckon or sign, as the eyes of the field generally follow the belli and the runners can get a good start. Agam, when more than a single is hit, the run «hou!d be run as fast as possible (be tween popping creases only, not past tho wickets) so as to enable the runner to keep as much as he can up liis sleeve to help his judgment in the last run. In tho second innings of Wairarapa the long stop was not in his proper form. NCtWith .standing that Hewat is a cruel man to bo in front of. and I also fancy that the Captain (for the first time in the last three seasons) made a slight error of judgment in keeping \\ illiams pegging away so long in the second innings, with Gault and Reeve in the team.
