THE BURNS’ CLUB.

(To the Editor.) Sir. Allow me to congratulate the Burns Club on at last having their idol placed conspicuously ill the front rank of great poets, and that too with out any apology for his lowly origin and lack of years, or that other appar ently great desideratum —a classical education. It must have been delightfully refreshing to listen to Mr Hogg s impassioned voice and praise us lie thought upon the regret table circumstance that his hero “had suffered from neglect and hod died of poverty;” or again, as he shook hiti head reproachfully, of ‘‘those who ranked Robert Bums a* a poet of inferior quality, i.e., second Unhappily there are still a few Hootch men (not worth their salt) who, from the men Ft whim or affectation, endeavor to patronise the memory of Bums and his works, while they reserve their full-blown admiration for (something they can’t understand) the sublimity of Milton or the subtlety of Hbapespeare. Of course then arc* no such Scotchmen in connection wuh the* Pahiatua Burns Club. I hey are all men of understanding and fine feeling. But what can be said of their judgment when we think of them- -a comparative few in a large hall rising and drinking solemnly to the memory and cosmopolitan spirit of “ Burns " —and their doors locked against the re»t «»f the community.
