Fires at Masterton.
A Cottage Destroyed.
By Telegraph—Own Correspondent. Masterton, October 19. A six-roomed cottage • owned by Mr Hopkins of Eketahuna and a former resident of Masterton, was totally destroyed by fire on Tuesday evening about 5.30, at the Kuripuni end of the town. At the time of the conflagration the Queen Street fire-bell was unhung, so that no alarm could be given to the majority of the residents, the small fireball at Kuripuni only ringing out the alarm. The cause of the fire is so far unknown.
A most serious conflagration occurred at Weraiti yesterday, (Wednesday), by which the extensive mill, owned by Messrs C. E. Daniell and G. and FI. Chamberlain, was totally destroyed together with 30,000 or 40,000 feet of sawn timber. The damage done is estimated at about £ISOO, and the only insurance is £4OO in the New Zealand Office. By the unfortunate tire about twenty employees are thrown out of employment, Sympathy is expressed on j»ll sides with the owners, as they are gentlemen of sterling honesty, and the disaster is a serious blow to them. It is only twelve months since they took possession of the mill.
