GRAIN REPORT Messrs Donald Reid and Co., Ltd., report as follows:— Wheat.—Xo milling wheat is offerin", and it is practically certain that there is now very little wheat left to sell in Otago.. Fowl wheat is still in demand, and the bulk of offerings are pool controlled Value of good whole fowl quality is sa, sacks extra, f.0.b., Dunedin. There is still a fair quantity of poorer quality available in the stores, and this is being sold at prices ranging from 4s 3d t» 4s 9d per bushel, ex store, Dunedin. Oats. —Odd samples are still coming t® hand, but unless they are of good quality it is hard to make a satisfactor.v sale. A few hundred bags of No. 1 feed quality have been shipped during the last week. Values are inclined to ease. A grade Gartons are worth 2s and B grade Is 9d to Is 10d, sacks extra, on trucks, at sidings, within a reasonable distance of a shipping port. Chaff. —There is ample coming to hand for all inquiries, and with the holidays approaching very little will now be wanted until work is recommenced in January. Prime oaten slieaf is the only quality that meets with a fairly . quick turnover. Medium and inferior is hard to quit when the better quality is available. Prime is worth £4, ex truck, or £4 10s. ex store, sacks extra. Potatoes. —The season for old potatoes is now finished, and lines held in store are being sold at about 3s per bag, sacks in. North-grown new potatoes are being sold freely in the auction rooms. LONDON WOOL SALES LONDON, December 7. At the wool sales 10,660 bales were offered, including 3532 from New Zealand. The present sales close on December 17. New Zealand scoureds, “Glenmore,” 13d and 163 d; greasy merino, “Richmond Brook,” lid and lOJd; greasy halfbred, ‘'Macdonald Downs, 121 d and 10jd. ADDINGTON STOCK SALE CHRISTCHURCH, December J). The effect of the prolonged spell of dry Weather was. evidenced by the general poor quality of .entries in the' fat stock Sections at the Addington market to-day. With the exception of the fat cattle sale, the market was reasonably buoyant, and Bn advance in fat lainb values was welcome to vendors.

. Store Sheep.—-—There was a mediutn6ized entry, consisting in the main of station wethers. No alteration was evidenced in values. Fat Sheep.—ln the entry of 3200 the general quality was not as good as at recent sales. The market was firm, with an advance of Is per head. SOUTHLAND MARKETS INVERCARGILL, December 11. . There has been a good deal of activity m the oats market during the last few days, and a fair amount of business has been done. Virtually, the cleans-up of all A grade in store have been sold on the basis of 2s IOJd. f.0.b., s.i. Considerable sales of undergrade, merely in so far as colour is concerned, have been effected at prices on trucks equivalent to 2s 8d for 43/441b, 2s 74d 42/431b in some instances for what were distinctly undergrade oats, but, on machining, were much improved in condition and weight, this operation generally improving appearance greatly and weight some 31b to 41b per bushel. There is every indication, owing to the appearance of the growing crops, here and elsewhere, and the need for feed for stock, that prices will appreciate still more. Inquiries are continually coming to hand from northern centres for ryegrass, but stocks in merchants’ hands are so small that little business is passing. It seems evident that higher rates must rule in the autumn, as it is evident only occasional arrears can possibly be shut up for seed purposes. The stock market continues fairly steady for all classes with a slight drop in values in the fat section. Fat cattle are still offering freely, and there has been a fairly large number sold. Fat sheep are coming on to the market- in large numbers, and the price of ewes has eased to some extent. The store sheep market is very quiet, with very few lines offering and little inquiry. Fat Cattle.—Prime heavy fat bullocks, £lO 10s to £ll 10s; medium-weight bullocks, £8 to £9 ss; lighter bullocks. £6 to £7; prime heavy heifers, £7 to £8 10s; medium heifers, £5 to £6; prime heavy cows, £6 10s to £7 10s; medium cows, £3 10s to £4 10s; vealers, to 20s; runners, to £2 10s. Fat Sheep.—Prime heavy wethers, 18s to 20s; medium wethers, 15s to 16s 6d; prime heavy ewes, 12s to 14s; medium ewes, 8s 6d to 10s; prime heavy lambs, 14s to 16s 6d; medium lambs, Ils 6d to 13s. Store Sheep.—Ewe hoggets, 14s to 16s; wether hoggets. 9s to Ils; young ewes and lambs. 9s to 10s 6d; failing-mouthed ewes and lambs, 6s to 7s 6d; aged ewes and lambs, 4s to ss. Store Cattle. —Three and four-year steers, £6 to £7; two-year steers, £4 to £5; yearling steers. £2 to £2 10s. CANTERBURY MARKETS CHRISTCHURCH, December 11. Very little business is passing in the grain market at present. A slight demand set in for cocksfoot during the week, but it resulted in little effect on the prices, which rose only a halfpenny’ a pound. A better demand for cowgrass has resulted in merchants’ getting rid of surplus stocks at 4d per lb increase on recent Tates. Ryegrass remained unaffected. Under-grade fowl wheat continues to cell owing to shortage that exists, and 1932 wheat has been sold on the basis of 4s 3d, f.0.b., s.e. No business is being done in oats, and in other lines the position is unchanged. OAMARU MARKETS OAMARU, December 11. During the week there have been inquiries for oats and oaten sheaf chaff. Considerable quantities of oats have been purchased from the south, and the market

appears to be much firmer. In spite of the dry weather conditions, there is still a fair output of rape, swede, and soft turnip seeds, farmers taking advantage of the recent rain to sow. There have been keen inquiries for fowl wheat from the north. The transactions in stock have been wholly’ confined to fats to meet the local demand from butchers. Private sales during the week included fat ewes, Ils, 12s. 13s, and 14s; fat lambs. 13s 6d, 15s, and 16s; fat wethers, 17s 6d: light fat steers, £8; fat steers, £9 ss; fat heifers, £5 to £6. DUNEDIN HIDE SALE Messrs Waters, Ritchie, and Co., Ltd., report as follows:—We held our monthly’ sale at our stores, Anderson’s Bay road, on Thursday morning, when we submitted a catalogue of 1591 hides and 977 yearlings and calfskins to the usual attendance of buyers. Competition was not quite so general, and, in sympathy with other markets, most grades were from id to §d per lb lower, with the exception of stout substance lots, which attracted keen competition, and showed an improvement of from Jd to 4d per lb. The top prices obtained for ox were BJd and 8d and cows s|d. Calfskins and yearlings were firm to a shade lower. COMPANY Details of the operations for the past year of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company show a credit balance for the year ended September 30 of £643.289, of which £155,051 was brought forward. To reserve for redemption of debentures £lOO,OOO is transferred. Dividend of 6 per cent, for the year on deferred stock, a reduction of 4 per cent., has been aheady announced. A dividend from the company’s investments and assistance from some of our allies enabled the board to recommend payment of the dividend on deferred stock, free of British income tax Reviewing the whole of the company’s operations, there are signs of improvement that should continue if the country’s finances are placed on a sound footing.” The credit balance compares with £866.303 for the previous year, including £120,864 brought forward. Transfer to debenture redemption reserve was £90,000 on that occasion, and £50.000 was placed to the Provident and Good Service Fund. The balance sheet is in much more detail than balance sheets for previous years. It discloses for the first time that its interests in subsidiary companies amount to £13.654,600, which is balanced by loans against securities amounting to £6.389.000, and loans and deposits from subsidiaries and associated companies, amounting to £7,291.104.
