Steel helmets will be included in the equipment of all ranks of the Ist Battalion Taranaki Regiment when they .-0 mto camp next year. An application “for the issue of “ tin hats ” was made to defence headquarters in Wellington bv the adjutant of the battalion, Captain 'F. L. Hunt, and a supply sufficient to equip the unit recently arrived in New Plymouth. The helmets have been reconditioned and are newly-painted. They will be issued to the troops shortly before the camp is held, and will be carried slung on the shoulder’s. As showing the demand there is for positions in the country by married couples, a South Canterbury farmer recently- required a man and his wife for a sheep station, and received no fewer than 60 applications for the position. At the time appointed for the farmer to interview the applicants, they all attended at the office of a labour agent in Thnaru. It was something of a formidable task for the farmer to interview each pair, but with characteristic fortitude he saw the job through before making a final selection.
