THE NEW HEBRIDES
FAILURE OF CONDOMINIUM.
FRENCH BRUTALITY TO PRISONERS.
AUCKLAND, August 24. Condemnation of the condominium in the New Hebrides which is administered jointly by the British and French Governments, was voiced by Bishop Molyneux, of Alelanesia, who arrived by the Niagara, after completing an extensive tour of his island diocese. He stated that the news of the public execution by the French authorities of six Chinese at Vila reached him in Australia. He was hprrified to read the details concerning the use of a guillotine before an idle crowd of several hundreds of spectators.
“ I have protested more than once concerning atrocities that have been brought to my notice,” said Bishoj; Molyneux, “ and the news of the recent affair did not surprise me. I am sorry to say it is what one has been led to expect of the French side of the administration. I have myself seen on the island of Santo a gang of prisoners chained together, working under guards armed with a lash. The methods adopted by the French towards their prisoners are totally different from those of the British. The condominium is undoubtedly bad and everybody who knows anything about it in London is in agreement on that point.” °
